A Rare Cased Queen Elizabeth II Hallmarked Sterling Silver and Gilt Ely Cathedral Goblet by Aurum Ltd (John M Willmin). The Goblet has a height of 6 5/8" with a diameter to the upper rim of 3 3/8" and a diameter to the base of 3 1/8. The Goblet has a substantial weight of 18.4 oz or 522 grams.
The Goblet has an excellent Shape standing on an Octagonal tapering base which has a stunning textured finish with the deep recess beautifully gilded in gold which leads up to the shaped bowl which also has a bright full gilt interior with the Ely Cathedrals heraldic Mermaid holding 3 keys aloft. The Goblet is marked to the base Number 535 of a limited edition of 673 made by Order of The Dean and Chapter of Ely to commemorate the Thirteenth Centenary of the Foundation in 673 AD. Aurum was a marketing agency that specialised in marketing limited editions of commemorative Cathedral silver goblets as collector's items of contemporary design with historic interest. Set up by John Sutherland-Hawes they initially used some of the current designers although most were designed and made by Hector Miller.All heavy gauge, superbly crafted and with quality gilding, they were expensive when first produced.
